기온과 히가시야마의 경계에 자리한 주홍빛 신사로, 창건된 지 1,350년이 넘었으며 매년 7월 열리는 일본 최고의 축제 중 하나인 기온마쓰리의 본거지다. 해가 진 뒤에는 수백 개의 등불이 걸려 환하게 빛난다.
The shrine grounds are free and open 24 hours; the main hall and lantern-lit approach are especially worth an evening visit. It sits right at the entrance to Maruyama Park, Kyoto's most popular cherry-blossom spot, making the two an easy pairing.
