Kyoto Ramen Koji
A food-court floor inside Kyoto Station gathering a rotating line-up of well-regarded ramen shops from across Japan under one roof. It's a fast, no-reservation way to try several regional ramen styles without leaving the station.

Kyoto International Manga Museum
A former elementary school converted into a museum holding around 300,000 manga volumes, including a 200-metre "Wall of Manga" that visitors can pull books straight off and read on the spot, plus rotating exhibitions on manga history and artists.

Kyoto Railway Museum
One of Japan's largest railway museums, near Kyoto Station, with over 50 real locomotives and train cars, including a steam locomotive roundhouse still in occasional operation, plus a running steam train ride and detailed model layouts.

Nishiki Market Food Tour
A guided walk through "Kyoto's Kitchen", a 400-year-old, five-block covered market street of roughly 100 stalls selling Kyoto vegetables, fresh-water fish, yuba (tofu skin), pickles, and skewered street food, with a guide pointing out what's worth stopping for.

Nara Day Trip: Deer Park & Todai-ji
A full-day trip to Nara, Japan's first permanent capital: over 1,200 free-roaming sacred deer in Nara Park, Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall (the world's largest wooden building), and Kasuga Taisha's thousands of stone and bronze lanterns.

Uji Day Trip: Byodo-in & Matcha Tasting
A half-day trip to Uji, Japan's most famous matcha-producing region: Byodo-in Temple's Phoenix Hall (the building depicted on the ¥10 coin), riverside walks along the Uji River, and matcha tastings and sweets at the town's historic tea houses.

Nijo Castle
A UNESCO-listed shogunal palace whose Ninomaru Palace corridors have deliberately squeaky "nightingale floors": the boards chirp underfoot as an early-warning system against intruders. The palace's painted sliding doors and the surrounding moat and gardens are equally worth the visit.

Kyoto Imperial Palace
The former residence of Japan's Imperial family until the 1868 move to Tokyo, set inside the vast, walled Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. The Shishinden (Hall for State Ceremonies) and its raked-gravel courtyard are the centrepiece: this is where every Emperor's enthronement took place until the Meiji era. Free to walk into, no reservation required.
