3 Days in Kyoto: A Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Higashiyama & Fushimi Inari

Start early at Fushimi Inari Taisha, which is free, open 24 hours, and quiet before 8am. From there, head north into Higashiyama: the sloped lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage, and Yasaka Shrine at the edge of Gion. Spend the evening in Gion and Pontocho, where the lantern-lit alley along the Kamo River is at its best after dark.

Day 2: Kinkaku-ji & Arashiyama

Morning at Kinkaku-ji, the gold-leafed pavilion reflected in its garden pond. Arrive at opening to beat the tour groups. From Kitayama, cross the city to Arashiyama for the bamboo grove and, if there's time, Nijo Castle's nightingale floors on the way. Arashiyama's riverside is a good spot to slow down for lunch before heading back into town.

Day 3: A Day Trip

With the city's core covered, use the third day for one of the two easiest rail day trips: Nara, for the free-roaming deer park and Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall (about 45 minutes by Kintetsu Line), or Uji, for Byodo-in Temple and the region's matcha (about 20 minutes by JR Nara Line). Both are comfortable half-to-full-day trips that don't require an early start.

Making It Work

Three days is enough to cover Kyoto's headline sights without a sprint, but book any kaiseki dinner or tea ceremony in advance, because the good ones fill up. An IC card covers buses, subway, and most of the trains you'll need across all three days; see the getting-around guide for the details.

Entry fees across the three days add up to less than you'd think: Kiyomizu-dera and Kinkaku-ji are ¥500 each, and Nijo Castle's combined grounds-and-palace ticket runs about ¥1,000, so call it ¥2,000 for Days 1 and 2 together. Fushimi Inari, Yasaka Shrine, and the Arashiyama bamboo grove cost nothing. Day 3 depends on which trip you pick: Nara adds the Kintetsu Line fare round-trip (¥760 each way, so ¥1,520) plus Todai-ji's ¥800 admission, about ¥2,320 total, while Uji adds the JR fare round-trip (¥240 each way, so ¥480) plus Byodo-in's ¥700 admission, about ¥1,180 total. All told, budget roughly ¥3,200–4,300 per person for entry fees and day-trip transport across the whole trip, before food, lodging, or getting around within the city.
