Arashiyama
Kyoto Neighbourhood Guide
Scenic, tranquil, nature-forward
Western Kyoto's riverside district, built around the bamboo grove and the Togetsukyo Bridge spanning the Katsura River against forested hills. Quieter temples, a monkey park, and rickshaw rides round out a full day trip in itself.

Iwatayama Monkey Park
A walk-up hill park in Arashiyama home to around 120 wild Japanese macaques roaming freely, with a panoramic view over Kyoto from the summit clearing. Visitors can hand-feed the monkeys from inside a caged feeding hut, the safe way round.

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
A quarter-mile footpath through towering bamboo stalks that creak and sway overhead in the wind, right beside Tenryu-ji temple in western Kyoto. One of the most photographed natural sights in Japan, and free to walk any time.
